| Contemporary July 2021, "Secular Santero": "With this piece I am trying to show the connection between the original New Mexican santeros and outsider art. We think of retablo style as "traditional" but the original painters were creating a style from a void very much like outsider artists creating new expressive motifs and unique aesthetic. For this piece i incorporated the stylings of Martin Ramirez, a celebrated outsider artist and Mexican immigrant who lived out his later life in a California asylum where he made these highly creative works until his death in 1963.(see pic 3) |
