The Devil Is In The Details:
This series of six drawings was inspired by "marginalia." This is the term for the drawings and flourishes in medieval illuminated manuscripts. I love looking closely at these odd doodles by monks. All things perverse and pagan could be sublimated into a beautiful pattern work rich with both zoomorphic and anthropomorphic forms lurking within. This is my contemporary contribution to this old form. I enjoy unhinging my mind and seeing what peculiar thing I can invent when I let go of a plan.
In Hebrew tradition, Liliith is said to be Adam's first wife, cast out of the Garden of Eden, and ruler of all wild animals. there are loose associations with the half female/half snake being Lillith or a type of demon. Here I have Lillith in a happier role of protector of god's creations and especially with those associated with easter. I like the idea that perhaps this evil woman can be rehabilitated.
